Population stormed Columbia University's Butler Library this week, taking over the building and creating chaos on campus[1][2]. The turbulent scene unfolded on Wednesday night as students were gearing up for finals, leaving many unprepared and irate.

The NYPD waded in, detaining 61 females and 19 males among the protesters. A close source confided that approximately 50 of the 80 arrested were affiliated with Columbia University[2].

The insurgents dubbed the library "Basel Al-Araj Popular University" and showcased their discontent by climbing atop desks and vocalizing calls for Palestine's freedom. They demanded that the university cease backing Israel[3].

A security guard at the entry point expressed the sentiment shared by many: "Nobody's getting in, nobody's getting out."

Claire Shipman, Columbia's interim president, expressed her dismay in a statement released on the day of the incident. She described the rowdy activities as a dangerous hindrance to academic progress and denounced the detestable actions that breached university rules and endangered student safety[2][3].

The protesters, donned in masks, invaded a library reading room and displayed pro-Hamas slogans within the premises[4]. Shipman firmly declared that any disruptions to the academic environment would not be tolerated. She underscored the university's stand against violence, antisemitism, and all manners of hate and discrimination.

Ironically, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] found itself keeping an eye on the proceedings to ascertain if any participants were noncitizens[5]. One ICE source revealed, "Time to make a statement."
