Makaylah Kelso: A Holy Cross Student with a Passion for Finance and Real Estate

Makaylah Kelso, a staff writer in the class of 2028, is no stranger to Holy Cross. Born in Meadville, PA, she has found a home at the college, immersing herself in various clubs and activities.

Kelso's favorite color is sky blue, and her favorite spot on campus is the pool tables in Hogan. When she's not busy studying Economics & Political Science, she can be found enjoying a game night with friends or savoring a meal of General Tso's Chicken at Kimball.

Outside of academics, Kelso is involved in Finance Club, WIB Planning Committee, ASL Club, and HC Launch. In her free time, she enjoys watching "The Office" and listening to "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King. Her guilty pleasure is scrolling through homes on Zillow, and her favorite off-campus restaurant is "The Burger Bah" in the Worcester Public Market.

Kelso's favorite movie is "Back to the Future", and her favorite book is "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. Her favorite memory at Holy Cross is having a game night with a group of friends.

When it comes to her future, Kelso plans to work in finance and/or real estate post-graduation. Her words to live by are "I took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." - Robert Frost.

Tuition Increases at Holy Cross

The Holy Cross Board of Trustees consistently increases tuition to support enhancements in academic excellence, campus facilities, student life, and mission-driven initiatives. These increases impact students and their families by raising the financial burden required to attend the college.

Although the College actively secures large gifts to offset costs, such as the recent $9.44 million raised to support access and student experience, tuition hikes can still challenge families financially, potentially affecting affordability and access.

Compared to public institutions like USF, which raised out-of-state tuition by about $1,000 annually to balance revenue and costs, Holy Cross appears to supplement tuition increases with substantial fundraising rather than relying solely on tuition hikes.

In summary, tuition increases occur to fund critical improvements aligned with the College’s mission and strategic goals, including facilities, academic programs, and student support. The impact on students/families is increased costs that raise the financial burden, but the College’s significant fundraising efforts aim to alleviate some of this impact by supporting access and affordability initiatives.
