During the timeframe of September 29th to October 6th, 2023, the Saarland populace will again center their attention on the Week of Action against Food Waste.

Week-long Campaign to Combat Food Waste

Beginning from September 29th and lasting until October 6th, 2023, the "Too Good To Go" action week returns to highlight the urgent issue of food waste for residents of Saarland. This time, under the motto "Germany Saves Food!", the spotlight shines on responsible food management. The sixth such event in Saarland and the fourth across the nation is coordinated and led by the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Mobility, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection of Saarland. The central concern: Despite each German person contributing only a small amount of food waste per meal, these contributions accumulate significantly. In recent years, the total waste has been a staggering 11 million tons. In 2020 alone, 6.5 million tons of food were discarded in private households.

This significant initiative features educational partnerships with four organizations, including the Network for Development Policy in Saarland e.V. and the Consumer Center Saarland e.V., offering targeted actions in Saarland schools. Highlights of the week include chef Jonas Schwed joining students at the Social Care Vocational Training Center in Saarbrücken on October 4th to create delicious dishes from leftovers. On October 6th, Minister Petra Berg will visit the Schengen-Lyzeum for a food waste workshop in cooperation with the Consumer Center.

The Bakers' Guild of Saarland e.V. and the Student Services will also participate. The former will sensitize customers, and the latter will offer special 'leftover' menus in their cafeterias. The SHS Stahl-Holding-Saar GmbH & Co. KGaA is actively supporting the event by informing its employees in the company cafeteria.
