Virgin Active's Smart Urinals Promote Hydration, AI Integration Boosts Profits

Virgin Active, the international fitness chain, has rolled out innovative smart urinals in select clubs. These devices analyse urine composition to measure hydration levels, promoting better health habits among members. Meanwhile, the company is careful about AI integration, hiring a Global AI Director to maximise returns on investment.

The smart urinals, introduced by Virgin Active, provide real-time feedback to users, encouraging them to stay hydrated. This initiative aligns with the company's exploration of technology in promoting longevity, including measuring factors like VO2 max, grip strength, and body composition.

Louise John, European Head of IT Service Delivery at Virgin Active, discussed these technological advancements in the fitness industry at UC Expo London 2025. The event featured discussions on the latest innovations and trends in unified communications, collaboration, AV, and customer experience technology.

To manage its global operations, Virgin Active maintains a standardised technology stack, including products from Microsoft, HP, and Poly. The company also uses Freshservice for IT service management and Freshdesk for its contact centre solution. However, the hybrid work model presents logistical challenges, such as tracking assets and managing postage costs. To address this, Virgin Active deploys PDQ Connect to monitor and update devices across locations, ensuring they are patched, secure, and compliant.

Virgin Active's smart urinals promote hydration and better health habits, while the company's cautious AI adoption ensures strategic and profitable integration. Standardised technology and robust management tools support Virgin Active's global operations, despite logistical challenges posed by hybrid work models.
