University's agricultural innovation center receives endorsement from the First Lady
New Centre Empowers Youth with Advanced Agricultural Technology Skills
The Kantaria Agricultural Technology and Innovation Centre (KATIC) has been established at the University of Nairobi, marking a significant step towards equipping Kenyan youth with modern agricultural technology skills [1][2].
At the launch of KATIC, First Lady Rachel Ruto highlighted the centre's role in deepening research and innovation geared towards food security. The centre, she stated, aligns with President William Ruto's Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) that focuses on transforming agriculture [2].
Bimal Kantaria, who announced the establishment of the centre, revealed that it will offer training, internships, and incubation programs for students and researchers. The centre will also house the first drones college and an Artificial Intelligence (AI) college, aiming to foster innovation and bridge the gap between academia and industry [1].
KATIC's focus on training youth and promoting sustainable farming practices is crucial, given the need for increased participation of young people in agricultural programs for agricultural progress. As noted by Mvurya, less participation from young people has been found in the food security program [2].
The government, through Mvurya's statements, remains committed to fostering an enabling environment for innovation and entrepreneurship in agriculture. The government has prioritized the food security program, with President Ruto leading the effort to make Kenya food secure [2].
Elgon Kenya Ltd. was responsible for building the centre, which has been donated by Bimal Kantaria's family as a contribution and a legacy for their late father. Kantaria expressed that his father was a great philanthropist who did many projects in the country. He further added that the opening of the KATIC is a way to remember his father's legacy [1].
The First Lady emphasized the need for continued support from the private sector, development agencies, and international collaborations for the success of KATIC. Graduates from KATIC will be solution-driven professionals with hands-on experience in emerging technologies, agribusiness, and value chain development [1].
In conclusion, the Kantaria Agricultural Technology and Innovation Centre at the University of Nairobi is a significant stride towards empowering Kenyan youth with the skills and knowledge needed for modern agriculture. The centre's focus on training, research, and innovation, as well as its commitment to sustainable farming practices, will undoubtedly contribute to the food security program and the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
