University students accused of anti-Semitic, Islamist, and misogynistic behavior face disciplinary action

The Islamic Student Group at Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel (IHG) has faced significant repercussions following a series of controversial incidents during the university's Islamic Week in May 2025. As a result, the university's board of directors revoked the IHG's official status as a recognised student body, barring it from using university buildings and digital infrastructure for its activities.

The incidents that led to this drastic step included the invitation of a noted Austrian Salafist speaker, Sertac Odabas, and the presence of a bookstall distributing Salafist literature. These actions raised concerns about the event’s ideological leanings. Additionally, witnesses reported instances of gender segregation practices during the event, such as women sitting at the back and using different entrances. However, the IHG claimed that segregation was voluntary and not mandatory.

The Islamic Week attracted attention beyond the university, with the German Office for Protection of the Constitution monitoring the event as it was heavily advertised within fundamentalist Islam circles. State interior minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack confirmed this surveillance in the state parliament.

Furthermore, antisemitic stickers were found on students’ laptops during related university events, adding to the controversy.

Following these developments, the university also warned of possible further measures against the group’s leaders, including expulsion, bans from campus, and legal actions.

In a statement, the IHG admitted to inviting a speaker without proper scrutiny and condemned antisemitism. However, the group's internal structures were deemed unsuitable for independent events. As a result, the board of the IHG resigned following the event.

Trust in the group has been severely shaken at the CAU, and the university is considering measures up to and including the expulsion of individual students or banning non-students from campus. Some areas during the event had "gender-sensitive" seating allocation, as claimed by the IHG.

The revocation of the IHG's rights follows allegations of Islamist, antisemitic, and misogynistic activities. The incidents are said to have occurred during the Islamic Week organized by the group in early May. A criminal complaint is also possible.
