University of Houston and Kroger Partner to Support On-Campus Food Pantry

The University of Houston and Kroger Houston have formed a three-year partnership to support the Cougar Cupboard, an on-campus food pantry that operates like a grocery store. The partnership, announced in a press release, aims to provide essential replenishment resources to the Cougar Cupboard.

Beau Trent-Pierce, Associate Director of the Cougar Cupboard, mentions that the pantry provides food for students on the go and for their families. The Cougar Cupboard offers a unique feature among universities, providing fresh produce to students.

Kroger's Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Foundation is involved in the partnership. The Foundation has committed $35,000 in funds and food to the Cougar Cupboard over the next three years. In addition, Kroger Houston will donate groceries to the pantry, and during the first year of collaboration, the Cougar Cupboard will receive $10,000 in vendor product donations.

The University of Houston estimates that nearly 15,000 students are experiencing food insecurity, which is about one-third of its population. The Cougar Cupboard operates to bridge the gap between students and access to food.

The Cougar Cupboard is located in a way that it is easily accessible for students, even from the dorms. The hours of operation for the Cougar Cupboard are: Tuesday 2p-6p, Wednesday 1p-5p, Friday 10a-2p, and the first Saturday of every month.

Rudy DiPietro, President of Kroger's Texas Division, states that the partnership aims to help students not have to choose between food and education. Disha Vats, a Cougar Cupboard Intern, encourages students to utilize the pantry as much as possible.

The University of Houston and Kroger's partnership is a significant step in addressing food insecurity on campus. The Cougar Cupboard serves thousands of students facing food insecurity and will continue to provide them with the resources they need to succeed academically.
