University of Hamburg Launches €3.1M Meat Industry Sustainability Study

The University of Hamburg has launched a comprehensive research project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), to investigate the international meat industry and its impact on sustainability goals. The project, titled 'The meat industry as part of the bioeconomy', will delve into the strategies, working conditions, and political influence of key players in the sector.

Led by Dr. Christin Bernhold, the team comprises three postdoctoral researchers, two doctoral students, and three student assistants. They will explore how international companies and industry organisations within the meat sector influence policy, civil society, and the implementation of the United Nations' sustainability goals.

The project, set to run until 31 March 2028 with around €3.1 million in funding, focuses on the meat industry as a case study due to its expected growth and societal debates surrounding health, climate protection, animal welfare, and working conditions. The team will examine the implications of corporate strategies on the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and internationalisation strategies within the sector.

The University of Hamburg's research project aims to provide valuable insights into the meat industry's role within the bioeconomy and its impact on sustainability goals.
