Türkiye's Schooling Years Drop to 17.2 Years in 2024

The expected years of schooling in Türkiye has seen a decline, dropping from 17.9 years in 2023 to 17.2 years in 2024. This change affects both boys and girls, with boys' school life expectancy falling to 16.7 years and girls' to 17.6 years. The decline is notable, considering the overall school life expectancy includes 1.5 years of pre-primary education and 11.9 years through the end of secondary school.

The provinces with the highest school life expectancy in 2024 were Bayburt for boys and Tunceli for girls. Other provinces with high figures included Bayburt, Ankara, Rize, Erzincan, and Tunceli. Conversely, the lowest figures were recorded in Şanlıurfa and Şırnak at 14.4 years.

The gender parity index in 2024 was 1.05, up from 0.97 in 2018. This indicates progress in favor of girls, with the longest expected schooling observed in Karabük and Istanbul at 19 years. The highest gender parity was found in Iğdır, Tunceli, and Bartın, while the lowest was in Şanlıurfa, Bitlis, and Siirt.

The decline in expected years of schooling in Türkiye, along with variations across provinces and genders, highlights the need for targeted educational policies. Despite the overall decline, progress in gender parity is encouraging. Further analysis is required to understand the factors contributing to these changes and to inform policy decisions.
