Prepare for some lunar action! Two landers, Blue Ghost from Firefly Aerospace and Resilience from ispace, are readying for lift-off aboard a SpaceX rocket this week. Their destinations? The Moon's surface! The launch, set for January 15 at 1:11 a.m. ET from Launch Complex-39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, will be broadcasted live on NASA's website and various platforms.

Firefly's Blue Ghost, part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, will journey to the Moon in about 45 days following its Earth orbit. The Japanese Resilience, meanwhile, will adopt a slower course, utilizing an elliptical transfer orbit before shifting into a lunar landing trajectory.

Interestingly, Resilience's earlier mission in April 2023 faced challenges, ultimately failing to make a soft landing and instead crashing upon lunar descent. This time, it's keen to target Mare Frigoris, a vast lunar plain in the Moon's far northern regions.

In contrast, Blue Ghost is aiming for Mare Crisium like a seasoned explorer, seeking answers to ancient mysteries hidden beneath its ancient lava-covered ground.

Blue Ghost's payload includes a dozen scientific instruments, such as LEXI to study X-rays and the Lunar Magnetotelluric Sounder to assess the moon's internal structure. Its mission goal is to last a lunar day, gathering valuable data on solar influences and the moon's regolith.

Resilience will carry a mini-rover named Tenacious to scout around the landing site and collect lunar soil samples. Additional experiments, like a water electrolyzer and various tech tests, will tag along.
