Summer Internship Program offered by KCUSD provides students with specialist work experience in their chosen industries
The Kings Canyon Unified School District's **Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP)** is a unique initiative that provides high school students with real-world work experience during the summer months. Started in 2016 with 10 auto-focused businesses, the program has grown to involve about 75 local shops across various industries, offering invaluable opportunities for students to learn essential workplace skills.
In 2021, around 120 students participated in the program, working up to 100 hours at minimum wage. One such student is Alexander Serna, who was offered a job with Lee's Service, a locally owned tire and auto repair shop in Reedley, after completing the SWEP program.
Alexander started working at Lee's Service as part of the SWEP program. The program's strict behavioral and academic standards ensured that only motivated students were selected. Robert Huebert, the owner of Lee's Service, was impressed with Alexander's work ethic and offered him a job this summer.
Alexander's skills in automotive repair, which he honed at Reedley High School, have served him well at Lee's Service. He has been learning the tricks of the trade from the shop's experienced staff, and plans to continue working there through college.
For businesses like Lee's Service, the SWEP program offers a pool of motivated young workers who can provide extra help during the summer months. Robert Huebert, who has been the district's longest partner in the SWEP program, recognizes the benefits it brings to both the students and his business.
