Students equipped for voting process at Holy Cross elections gathering

In the wake of the upcoming 2024 elections, Holy Cross College is taking proactive steps to ensure that students are well-informed and engaged in the democratic process. The College's efforts are spearheaded by the 2024 Elections Forum, a bi-weekly newsletter series that aims to keep the campus community updated on all things election-related.

The Elections Forum is a collaborative effort, bringing together faculty members, students, and Holy Cross staff. It is working in tandem with the Democratic Futures Forum, another group dedicated to fostering trust in democracy among students.

As part of its mission, the Elections Forum encourages students to visit the All In to Vote websites for essential voting information. The upcoming elections will fill various positions, including Commencement Chairs, Senators at Large, Class Senators, Class Councils, and Co-Presidents.

The Student Government Association (SGA) recently announced that the elections will be held next week. In preparation, student organizations such as College Democrats and College Republicans are hosting events to help students stay informed about the election. The SGA also passed a bill to implement an electoral college system in their yearly elections, with each dorm receiving a set number of electoral votes based on its population.

In addition to the Elections Forum's efforts, Holy Cross College is participating in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, a national nonpartisan program designed to increase student voter participation and institutionalize democratic engagement on campuses. President Rougeau has signed a pledge to ensure that all eligible students can register to vote and cast their ballots in the upcoming elections.

The College's involvement in the ALL IN Challenge includes nonpartisan voter education and engagement, aligning with the challenge's goals to cultivate lifelong active citizenship. While specific participation details for Holy Cross College are not yet available, it is expected that the College will commit to increasing student voting rates, submit a democratic engagement action plan, encourage campus groups to participate, and possibly aim for awards based on their National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) data.

To further support students, the Elections Forum has organized events to help students register to vote, request absentee ballots, and stay informed about voting dates. The Prior Center recently hosted David E. Sanger, a White House and national security correspondent for The New York Times, for a conversation about foreign policy challenges facing the next president.

On September 17th, an all-day event was held for National Voter Registration Day, organised by the Elections Forum in collaboration with the McFarland Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture and the Campus Activities Board (CAB). The College community came together to ensure that every student has the opportunity to make their voice heard in the upcoming elections.

As the election season progresses, Holy Cross College continues to move forward, together, in fostering an informed and engaged student body. Kate Santini '27, the Chief News Editor, encourages students to stay tuned for updates from the 2024 Elections Forum.
