Steady Decrease in Academic Performance of Arts Students in Maha HSC Results

Catch Up: Arts Students in Maharashtra Struggle Amid Declining HSC Results

bankrupt the trend here: Maharashtra’s State Board’s latest HSC results have uncovered a shocking pattern — a persistently dropping performance among Arts stream students. The drop? Nearly 10% over the past four years, with a steep 5.36% plummeting just last year.

Here’s the lowdown:

PUNE: Take a seat, the numbers don't look good. The State Board's results reveal a staggering decline in the passing percentage for the Arts stream. In 2022, it was 90.51%, but it dipped to 84.05% in 2023, climbed slightly to 85.88% in 2024, and then took a nose dive to 80.52% in 2025. Comparatively, the Science and Commerce streams have kept things steady.

What's the cause? Well, the State Board is clueless. But education pros attribute this to the brain drain post-class 10, leaving academically weaker students in the Arts stream, leading to sloppy study habits and higher failure rates.

Sharad Gosavi, chairman of the Maharashtra State Board, put it bluntly, "The declining performance can't be pinned on any single factor. But the exodus of high-scorers to the Science and Commerce streams after class 10 is glaring."

Meanwhile, retired professor Shankar Karnik expressed concern over the long-term repercussions. "The sharp decline in Arts pass percentages is a huge red flag for university enrollment in Humanities and social science. It could snowball into a disaster for college-level Arts education in the state."

So why are the Arts taking a backseat? Blame the technological revolution and better career prospects in Science and Commerce. Armed with more employable degrees, students are steering clear of the Arts, where opportunities remain bleak.

In short: Arts students are struggling, and it's high time we did something about it. Talk soon!
