School Schedules and Weather Alerts Across India

In various parts of India, schools are adapting to the changing weather conditions, with some extending vacations and declaring holidays due to inclement weather.

Rain-affected schools

In Punjab, schools are operating normally, but low-lying, flood-prone areas remain vigilant against weather changes. In Pune, schools declared a holiday on September 15 due to overnight rainfall. Schools in Uttarakhand's Dehradun district have also been closed due to heavy rainfall.

The Himalayan region, including Jammu and Kashmir, and the state of Uttarakhand, have faced severe floods, landslides, and evacuations amid monsoon storms, leading to last-minute school closures in these areas on September 16, 2025. The Delhi area, including Gurugram, and Punjab have also faced severe monsoon impacts that prompted school closures.

Extended holidays

Several states have announced extended Dussehra vacations for schools, providing students with a long stretch of holidays before classes resume in October. Karnataka schools will be closed from September 20 to October 6 and will reopen on October 7. Telangana schools will be on a 13-day Dussehra break from September 21 to October 3. Andhra Pradesh schools will have Dussehra holidays from September 24 to October 2.

Weather alerts and school closures

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for several districts in Tamil Nadu, and a Red and Orange alert in several districts of Maharashtra, warning of heavy showers, thunderstorms, and winds. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, covering six districts on September 16, expanding to seven districts on the following day, and extending to 22 districts on Wednesday and 11 districts on Thursday.

No school closures have been declared in Telangana and Tamil Nadu as of now, but parents should monitor updates from schools and authorities. Schools in Jammu & Kashmir have reopened after weeks of disruption due to floods and landslides, with some affected areas still experiencing delays in full reopening.

Upcoming nationwide school holidays

The next significant nationwide school holidays will fall later this month during Durga Puja, Saptami, Ashtami, and Dussehra celebrations.

Parents and students are advised to stay updated with local weather forecasts and school announcements to ensure safety and preparedness during this monsoon season.
