Safari 26 Brings Seamless Online Identity Verification with W3C Digital Credentials API
Safari 26, due for release in late 2025, will introduce a significant advancement in online identity verification. The new version will support the W3C Digital Credentials API, enabling direct access to mobile identity documents, or 'mdocs', stored in digital wallets on Apple devices.
Previously, users had to photograph physical IDs and submit selfies for verification, a process that was cumbersome and prone to errors. The new API addresses these issues by allowing websites to request mdocs directly from digital wallets on iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. This process is more secure and convenient, as it minimizes data shared with websites and uses cryptographic signatures, device binding, and session encryption.
The implementation adheres to international standards, including ISO/IEC 18013-5 and ISO/IEC 18013-7, ensuring interoperability with other platforms adopting the same protocols. Non-Apple platforms can also participate using QR codes and the iPhone's camera app. This update is part of WebKit's ongoing effort to improve online security and user experience.
The introduction of the W3C Digital Credentials API in Safari 26 will streamline and secure online identity verification. Users can look forward to a more seamless and secure verification process when browsing on Apple devices. The API's adherence to international standards also paves the way for wider adoption and interoperability across different platforms.
