Davao City Mobile Library Program Bridges Learning Gaps and Boosts Literacy

The Davao City Mobile Library Program, an initiative by the Davao City Library and Information Center (CLIC), is making a significant impact in promoting literacy and reducing educational inequities in far-flung barangays.

CLIC's Officer-in-Charge, Salome Enoc, stated that the program's primary goal is to foster a love for books and reading, especially in remote areas, to bridge the educational gap. The program operates year-round, with visits to public schools primarily on Mondays to Thursdays, and private schools on Fridays, while also setting aside time for maintenance.

During the month of August alone, the program visited Generoso Elementary School, J.V. Ferriols Elementary School, Columbos Elementary School, and Emilio J. Estipona National High School.

The Mobile Library Program offers various services, including book lending, reading tutorials, emergency preparedness lectures, and daycare-focused services. The program also conducts arts and crafts, book reading sessions, film showings, puppetry, and storytelling to engage children and foster a love for learning.

The program's impact is evident in the high basic literacy rate in Davao City. According to the DepEd Davao City Division, the city's basic literacy rate has reached 93.5%. The Mobile Library Program is cited as a key factor contributing to this high literacy rate by increasing accessibility to reading materials and educational support for children, especially in marginalized areas.

The program is supported by the Department of Education (DepEd), which approves the schedule and monitors the program. The CLIC operates district libraries located in Calinan, Baguio, Buda, Toril, and Tugbok, with plans to establish another district library in Toril.

Davao City has three mobile libraries, one of which is designated for daycare centers, and another for providing "Emergency Preparedness Lectures." The CLIC encourages Dabawenyos to visit the district libraries and avail of their services.

In summary, the Davao City Mobile Library Program enhances literacy and educational equity through mobile access to library services and targeted tutorials, demonstrating a significant positive influence on literacy in Davao City. The program serves as a bridge to opportunities for learning and support for literacy in far-flung barangays and underserved public schools.
