Retired politician Louis Ng accepts faculty position at NUS College
Louis Ng, the former Member of Parliament for Nee Soon, has embarked on a new journey as an Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore's (NUS) NUS College (NUSC), effective July 1, 2025.
Ng, who is renowned for founding ACRES, a Singaporean animal welfare charity, and holding a master’s degree in primate conservation, brings a unique blend of experiences to his role. He is an NUS graduate from 2002.
In his new position, Ng will be teaching elective courses, with a focus on legislative processes and policymaking, although the course is subject to curriculum committee approval. Beyond this, the specifics of his teaching responsibilities are not yet specified.
Ng will also supervise overseas student projects aimed at benefiting communities in Southeast Asia, including a project in Laos. The details of these projects are not disclosed.
The role at NUSC is a non-tenure appointment under the "practice track", which is designed for industry leaders and professionals who remain actively engaged in professional practice while teaching and mentoring students. This track is distinct from traditional academic tracks and can be at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level.
NUS College, established in 2022 through the merger of the University Scholars Programme and Yale-NUS College, offers a practice track that allows professionals to balance their professional commitments with teaching and mentoring students.
In addition to his teaching role, Ng supports the development of NUS College's Impact Experience programmes, which involve student engagement in sustainability solutions.
With his background in animal welfare advocacy, political experience as a former MP, and conservation expertise, Ng's role at NUSC bridges practical policymaking experience and community-impact education through teaching and project supervision in a practice-oriented professorial appointment.
