The Designers in Residence scholarship program, based in Pforzheim, Germany, is set to return for its next round in 2024. This program, overseen by Ulrich E. Haag, head of events & sponsorship at Sparkasse Pforzheim Calw, is renowned for its lasting impact on the city, placing it in an international design context and fostering global designer exchange.

This year, the program is accepting applications from designers in various fields, including jewelry, fashion, accessories, industrial, communication design, and other design disciplines. The application deadline is November 15, 2024, for international aspiring designers.

The scholarship offers three scholarships for the next round, providing the opportunity for designers to work on a personal project in Pforzheim from April to June 2024. Scholars will have access to workshops, coworking space, and equipment from the EMMA creative center and participating partners.

Scholars will also have the chance to exchange ideas with the jury members and professors of the University of Pforzheim. The jury, comprising experts such as Jiro Kamata, a jewelry artist who studied at the University of Pforzheim, Romin Heide, an industrial designer involved in the Association of German Industrial Designers, and Louise Bennetts, a fashion designer, head of research and development at Reweave, and lecturer at the Royal College of Arts, will select the scholars for the Designers in Residence program.

The results of the scholars will be presented in an exhibition at the EMMA creative center in Pforzheim. Scholars will also benefit from free accommodation, financial support, and a material cost subsidy. Moreover, they will have the opportunity to network with creative professionals in Pforzheim.

Almut Benkert, head of the creative economy department at the Eigenbetrieb Wirtschaft and Stadtmarketing Pforzheim, states that the Designers in Residence scholarship program offers newcomers the opportunity to focus on what's important for their future careers.

For those seeking designer residencies or scholarships beyond Pforzheim, there are numerous other opportunities available. For instance, the Serendipity Arts Residency 2025 based in New Delhi accepts applications by March 6, 2025, providing furnished accommodation, studio space, an allowance covering meals, and a production grant for material and technical support to five artists-in-residence (including designers/artists across disciplines).

These residencies often share similarities, offering lived-in studio apartments with workspaces, stipends or grants, mentorship, networking opportunities, technical support, and public engagement such as open studios or exhibitions. It is always advisable to check directly with art or design institutions, programs, or organizations known for designer residencies for the most accurate information.

Engaging in lifelong learning and self-development, emerging designers are encouraged to apply for the Designers in Residence scholarship program, offering a unique opportunity to work on a personal project in Pforzheim, Germany, from April to June 2024. Successful applicants will have access to workshops, coworking space, and equipment, along with the chance to collaborate with professors and jury members from the University of Pforzheim, and network with creative professionals in the city.

Expanding horizons through global exchange, designers can also consider applying for the Serendipity Arts Residency 2025, based in New Delhi, India, which provides similar resources and opportunities for artists across various disciplines, including designers.
