Streamlined Safety Measures: Essen's Crackdown on Parent Taxis and Speeding Near Schools

On a noteworthy Tuesday, Essen's police force rolled out an exclusive safety operation, targeting critical spots around elementary schools and kindergartens. Unfortunately, many well-intentioned parents found themselves ensnared in the proactive action.

The police force beefed up patrols on streets leading to schools, launching a city-wide initiative aimed at safeguarding young pedestrians in road traffic. This measure also aimed to curb the nuisance of "parent taxis" that clogged these routes daily.

As the clock struck 7:30 AM, the Hinseler School in Überruhr prepared for the day ahead. Located off the Úberruhrstraße, the school is primarily accessible via the Treibweg, a narrow residential lane ending in a cul-de-sac. Despite this, parents insist on driving down it every morning, determined to drop off their children mere meters from the school grounds. According to police spokeswoman Sonja Kochem, they've identified nine such critical spots across Essen, with frequent complaints from neighbors.

Hinseler School in Überruhr: Daily Recipe for Chaos

Navigating the Treibweg is fraught with challenges. The driveways of private properties frequently serve as turnarounds, leading to near misses and perilous scenes under such confined spaces. Kochem emphasized, "We aim to engage with parents and propose viable alternatives." Often, a simple solution involves parking a few meters away from the school grounds and walking the remaining distance with the child.

Speedsters Caught Red-handed

The safety operation extended beyond traffic congestion. In front of the Adolf-Reichwein School in Altenessen, a vehicle was clocked at a staggering 54 km/h, more than twice the 30 km/h limit. "Over 200 citizen interactions took place in the vicinity of kindergartens and schools. In most cases, officers had cordial discussions and clarified wrongdoings," the police reported in the afternoon. A total of 54 violations were recorded, including parking infractions in tight streets near schools.
