Prospective Major Democratic Contenders for the 2028 Presidential Race Yet to Rule Out Participation
The Democratic Party, still reeling from the 2024 election loss, finds itself in a state of flux as several high-profile politicians express interest in the 2028 presidential race.
Senator Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota has voiced her hope that the party doesn't exclude a female candidate from contention for the White House. Meanwhile, Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey, who stirred presidential speculation with a 25-hour filibuster speech, has been positioned as a potential leader for the Democratic Party by pollster Frank Luntz.
Jared Polis, the governor of Colorado, and Josh Shapiro, the governor of Pennsylvania, are also potential candidates for the 2028 primary. Polis has not explicitly ruled out a presidential run, while Shapiro has expressed hesitation about D.C. politics but remains a contender.
Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, is often mentioned among the leading candidates for the 2028 race. In the east, Andy Beshear, the governor of Kentucky, has expressed interest in a potential presidential run in 2028, stating he may "take a look" at launching a campaign.
Mark Kelly, the senator from Arizona, did not rule out a potential presidential run when asked about it. Similarly, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York representative, has made noise about a possible presidential run with campaign-style social media content, but has not made a clear announcement.
J.B. Pritzker, the Illinois governor, has been noncommittal about his future plans, but is eligible to run for a third term as governor and potentially for president. Gina Raimondo, President Joe Biden's commerce secretary and former governor of Rhode Island, has expressed interest in a potential run in 2028.
Other potential candidates mentioned for the 2028 Democratic primary include former ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel, California Representative Ro Khanna, businessman Mark Cuban, and ESPN sports commentator Stephen A. Smith.
However, as of now, no politician has officially declared their intention to run for the 2028 U.S. presidential election, nor are there confirmed additional candidates who will declare by November 2026, the time when candidates traditionally announce their presidential runs, following the midterm elections.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the Democratic Party awaits the formal announcements of these potential candidates, each bringing their unique perspectives and experiences to the table. The race for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination is shaping up to be a competitive and intriguing one.
