Proposal to Expand and Consolidate the Carl-Humann Gymnasium at a Central Location

The city council of Essen is set to make a significant decision in its September session, regarding the expansion and centralization of the Carl-Humann-Gymnasium in Steele. The project, originally planned to bundle specialist rooms, administration, and school life at one location, has now expanded to include centralized news construction, which was not part of the original plan. This expansion also includes the construction of a new 1.5-field sports hall. The total costs of the expanded project are approximately 34.8 million euros, significantly higher than the original plan's 14.3 million euros. The cost increase is due to the expanded scope, which now includes both the centralized news construction and the sports hall news construction. The centralization of the Carl-Humann-Gymnasium to the main site on Laurentiusweg creates the possibility to use the freed-up building on Jacob-Weber-Straße for future expansion. This building is expected to relieve the Franz-Dinnendahl-Realschule in the future, as it is urgently in need of expansion. The committee for urban planning and construction made this recommendation in its meeting on September 18, 2025. Further information can be found in document 0835/2025/7 and on www.our website/machtschule. For more updates and press releases, please contact the city portal Press and Communications Office at presse@our website or visit www.our website/presse. This expansion represents a further development of previous plans, as it involves consolidating the entire school operation at the Laurentiusweg site. The adjacent hereditary building right is included in the planning for this project. The city council will carefully consider the benefits and drawbacks of this project, including the economic, organizational, and pedagogical advantages it offers, before making its decision. The expansion of the Carl-Humann-Gymnasium is expected to significantly improve the educational landscape in Essen, making it an exciting prospect for the future of education in the city.
