"Post every setback, there's a resurgence" - Reasoning behind the top real estate leader's belief in the influence of camaraderie and gratitude.
In an interview with Elizaveta Shumova, an author and expert at Myfin Business Club ANOMALIA, Vyacheslav Tarasov, the founder of the successful real estate agency "Guarantor Real Estate" in Belarus, shares his insights on preventing burnout in startups and businesses.
Tarasov, who has personally faced burnout, emphasizes the importance of a sustainable work environment for long-term productivity and well-being. He acknowledges that the main cause of burnout for him was workaholism, chronic overload, and the belief that success can only be achieved through endless work.
To combat this, Tarasov implemented several effective strategies:
- Clear Goal Setting and Prioritization: Focusing on defining clear, achievable goals and prioritizing tasks helps avoid overwhelming the team with too many responsibilities at once.
- Balanced Workload Distribution: Ensuring tasks are evenly distributed among team members prevents individuals from becoming overburdened, fostering a collaborative environment.
- Regular Breaks and Downtime: Encouraging regular breaks during work hours and maintaining a healthy work-life balance are essential for recharging mentally and physically.
- Open Communication Culture: Promoting transparent and open communication within the team allows employees to feel comfortable discussing their stress or workload issues early on.
- Focus on Personal Development: Supporting employees’ professional growth and personal development can increase motivation and reduce feelings of stagnation.
- Realistic Expectations and Flexibility: Setting realistic deadlines and remaining flexible to adapt plans as needed reduces pressure on the team.
- Recognition and Positive Reinforcement: Regularly acknowledging and appreciating employees’ efforts boosts morale and motivation.
In addition to these strategies, Tarasov learned to delegate and trust his employees to build a more independent team. The team at "Guarantor Real Estate" conducts joint activities, corporate events, and sports rewards to reduce the risk of burnout.
Moreover, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for a healthy work environment. Each morning starts with a mini-"Oscar" ceremony in the company, where employees are publicly recognised for their achievements. The company also has a system of named badges that are awarded to highlight exceptional work.
Tarasov also stresses the importance of keeping an eye out for toxic employees and parting ways with them promptly. He believes it's easier to replace an employee than to revive a burned-out one.
Notably, "Guarantor Real Estate" has won the No1 award in Belarus twice, demonstrating the effectiveness of these strategies in creating a sustainable work environment. Regularly expressing gratitude is also important in the workplace, as Tarasov acknowledges that this played a crucial role in reducing his own stress levels.
