NYSC Director General Advocates for Cultural Harmonization Among Corps Members

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is challenging Corps members posted to Katsina State to actively promote and embrace cultural integration as part of their national duty. This call came during a visit by the Corps' Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, as part of his nationwide tour of NYSC formations.

In his address, Nafiu emphasized the importance of understanding and respecting the customs and traditions of the Katsina State community. He encouraged Corps members to embrace the rich cultural heritage of the region, emphasizing the significance of their service and the platform provided by the NYSC program in their personal growth and development.

Highlighting the beauty of diversity, the NYSC head urged members to take time to learn the culture of Katsina State, integrate with the local population, and respect their values, religion, and customs.

Stressing security awareness, Nafiu urged Corps members to avoid night travel and remain vigilant about personal safety. He also reminded them of their responsibility to leave a positive impact at their Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) and contribute to community development projects.

Additionally, the DG advised Corps members to refrain from political involvement during their service year, as well as from posting negative messages on their social media handles. He reminded them that they are bound by the NYSC oath, and their conduct must reflect the Corps' motto of "Service and Humility."

Embracing Cultural Integration

By actively promoting cultural integration, Corps members can advocate for national unity and cross-cultural understanding, enriching the fabric of Nigerian society. Seasoned Corps members have exemplified this by engaging in cross-cultural marriages, bridging ethnic and religious divides, and contributing to inter-community harmony.

Operational Expectations

In striving to achieve this goal, Corps members in Katsina State are expected to:

  • Adhere to security guidelines and avoid night travel to remain safe.
  • Maintain a positive online image, refraining from posting negative content on social media platforms.
  • Contribute to community development projects and leave a lasting, positive impact at the PPA.

Challenges and Accountability

While systemic issues such as inadequate lodging for disciplined members and inconsistent disciplinary practices have been reported in some regions, the NYSC leadership in Katsina State is dedicated to prioritizing cultural immersion and fostering an environment that promotes national unity and cultural understanding.
