Norwegian Ambassador Boosts Durham's Norway Ties, Discusses Energy at 'Energetic Future'

Norwegian Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Tore Hattrem, recently visited North East England. He attended the Energetic Future conference at St James' Park in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and met with Durham University officials to discuss energy, research collaboration, and educational ties.

During his visit, Ambassador Hattrem gave a talk at Durham's School of Government and International Affairs, sharing insights on conflict resolution in Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. He also met with Vice-Chancellor and Warden Professor Karen O'Brien and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global) Professor Claire O'Malley to explore ways to strengthen the university's partnership with Norway.

The Ambassador's trip comes amidst plans to reinforce research and education connections between Durham and Norway, following a UKRI cooperation agreement with Research Council Norway. Durham students already benefit from educational exchange agreements with several Norwegian universities. The university has a strong history of working with Norway, with established partnerships across various fields.

At the Energetic Future conference, Ambassador Hattrem joined Professor Simone Abram and Professor Simon Hogg from Durham as panellists. They discussed the 'INCLUDE' project, a collaboration between Durham and five Norwegian institutions focusing on achieving socially inclusive and just energy transformation. This project is supported by the Norwegian Research Council and led by the Centre for Socially Inclusive Energy Transitions.

Ambassador Hattrem's visit to Durham focused on the refreshed Green Industrial Partnership between the UK and Norway. Both countries aim to collaborate more closely on energy and research, with Durham University playing a significant role in these efforts.
