North Rhine-Westphalia Boosts Construction Appeal with BIM Study
A comprehensive study is underway in North Rhine-Westphalia to boost the appeal of construction professions among young specialists. Led by Igor Fedorov, the acting head of the regional construction department, the research aims to identify barriers to attracting talent and fostering cooperation between educational institutions and businesses.
The study, focusing on BIM-based building permit processes, is a collaborative effort involving Ruhr-Universität Bochum, the city of Bochum, VSK Software GmbH, and the Ministry for Home Affairs, Local Government, Construction, and Digitalization. It aims to make construction professions more sought-after by addressing issues highlighted through surveys of current employees, students, and employers.
The results, to be summarized in December, will guide improvements in the professional environment and strengthen ties between business and education. The findings are continuously integrated into updates of the Modellierungsrichtlinie (MRL), with a recent workshop held on September 12, 2025. The study holds strategic importance for developing the human resources potential of the construction industry.
