New Report Urges UK to Expand Free Bus Travel for Young People

A new report urges the UK government to expand concessionary bus travel schemes, particularly for young people. The study, led by the Health Foundation, recommends waiving or reducing charges to improve access to affordable transport for those aged 17 to 20.

Bus services are crucial for young people, with 17-20-year-olds relying on them more than any other age group. The report suggests prioritizing them in transport spending and extending free or discounted bus passes to the whole of the UK for under 18s. This would end the current postcode lottery, ensuring equal access to affordable transport for students and young job seekers.

The study also emphasizes the importance of promoting walking and cycling among young people. Encouraging these alternatives to cars at a young age increases the likelihood of using them later in life. Dr Kiron Chatterjee from UWE Bristol supports these recommendations, highlighting the strong social, economic, and environmental benefits.

The Health Foundation inquiry report urges the government to overhaul transport policies, focusing on young people's needs. Expanding free and discounted bus travel, along with promoting walking and cycling, could significantly improve young people's access to opportunities and support a healthier society.
