Multi-generational dwelling in Lünen, VHS (Volkshochschule): joint learning and connection initiatives
In the heart of Luenen, a significant collaboration has been forged between the Adult Education Centre (VHS) Luenen and the DRK Mehrgenerationenhaus at Luisenhüttenstraße. On September 4, 2025, this partnership was officially announced, marking a new chapter in the town's educational landscape.
Björn Falke, director of VHS Luenen, and Tim Jesella, coordinator of the DRK Mehrgenerationenhaus, emphasised the partnership's potential to create real added value for the people of Luenen. The aim of this collaboration is to combine local educational offerings with intergenerational meeting formats, reaching even more people.
The cooperation aims to expand the basic idea of the DRK Mehrgenerationenhaus with new educational and cultural offers. Through the partnership with VHS Luenen, the offer at DRK Mehrgenerationenhaus is now extended by additional events such as the "Sprachcafé Deutsch - Welcome to the Exchange!", a free, weekly German language practice event held every Wednesday from 10:00 to 12:30.
The "Sprachcafé Deutsch" event is just one example of the joint events that have already taken place. A wine seminar has also been part of the collaboration, with more events planned in the future. The facilities of the DRK Mehrgenerationenhaus, including their open design and sun terrace, are suitable for events with an exchange character.
The DRK Mehrgenerationenhaus sees itself as an open meeting point for all generations. As Mine Piristine, head of the program area at VHS Luenen, stated, the event provides an opportunity for people to stay engaged after the integration course. This partnership is a testament to the importance of cooperation and the shared commitment to strengthen education in Luenen as a common task, as part of the "Luenen moves education" network.
Jesella highlighted the significance of the partnership for the DRK Mehrgenerationenhaus: "Our house stands for encounter, openness, and togetherness." This partnership not only enriches the educational offerings in Luenen but also fosters a sense of community and inclusivity, embodying the spirit of the DRK Mehrgenerationenhaus.
As this partnership continues to evolve, the people of Luenen can look forward to a vibrant and diverse educational landscape that encourages lifelong learning and intergenerational engagement.
