Majority of Germans Now Believe Israel Committing Genocide in Gaza

A recent YouGov poll reveals a shift in German public opinion, with a majority now believing Israel is committing atrocities in Gaza. Meanwhile, the EU finds itself in a pivotal position to influence the peace process, despite internal divisions and Germany's role in supporting the conflict.

The EU, with its Association Agreement with Israel, holds considerable sway, comparable to the U.S.'s military aid. However, internal divisions have hindered its role for the past two years. Germany, a key EU member, has been directly supporting the war effort through weapons exports and diplomatic cover, which could hinder the EU's peace efforts.

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced support for sanctions against Israel, joining EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's proposal to suspend trade and sanction extremist ministers. To fully leverage the EU's role, Germany may need to reassess its doctrine and support these measures. The EU's capacity building missions and reconstruction funds could also play a crucial part in implementing Trump's peace plan.

With a majority of Germans now supporting the atrocity accusation, and key EU members pushing for sanctions, the EU's role in the Gaza conflict is under scrutiny. Germany's role in supporting the war effort, and the EU's internal divisions, may need to be addressed for the EU to effectively contribute to a successful peace process.
