Lehigh University Lands $6M Grant to Boost Translational Research
Lehigh University has received a $6 million grant from the National Science Foundation to boost its translational research efforts. The university aims to bridge the gap between academic research and practical solutions for societal issues. This is the first time such awards have been given.
Lehigh Provost Nathan Urban stressed the importance of translating new knowledge to tackle real-world problems. The university plans to expand educational programs, hire more personnel, and forge external partnerships to drive this initiative. The Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program, part of the NSF's Directorate for Technology Innovation and Partnerships, will fund these efforts.
Lehigh has assembled an interdisciplinary team, led by John Coulter, senior associate dean for research in the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, to oversee this work. The team, known as the ART Leadership Team, includes Dominic Packer, Lee Kern, Henry Odi, Himanshu Jain, and other faculty members. Carnegie Mellon University will serve as a peer mentor to help Lehigh grow its translational research work and transform its culture.
The university aspires to double its research activity and more than double its translational work through this initiative. A portion of the funding will support seed translational research projects and education and training activities.
Lehigh University's $6 million ART grant seeks to enhance the impact of research by translating scientific discoveries into practical solutions. With the help of Carnegie Mellon University and its dedicated leadership team, Lehigh is poised to strengthen its translational research efforts and better serve society.
