Lehigh Alumni Association Summer 2025 Communication Letter

In the academic world, Dave Williams has made a name for himself as a distinguished figure. Currently serving as the emeritus dean of engineering and a professor of materials science and engineering at Ohio State University, Williams' impressive career spans over four decades.

Prior to his current role, Williams was a faculty member at Lehigh University for an impressive 31 years. During his tenure, he held various positions, including department chair, Harold Chambers Senior Professor of materials science and engineering, and vice provost for research. In 2007, he left Lehigh to become the president of the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Among the notable events in Williams' career is a dinner he attended in the late 1990s, hosted by Gene Mercy, a trustee leader of the Presidential Search Committee. The dinner was held at Mercy's apartment, and during the event, they interviewed a sitting private university president. However, the circumstances surrounding Mercy's invitation to a meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev during his tenure as head of the Trustees in 1998 remain a mystery, as no search results provide information about this encounter.

Gene Mercy, a significant figure in the U.S. and international community, passed away in Fall 2024. The following morning after the dinner, Mercy was supposed to discuss the candidate with the committee, but he had to meet with Mikhail Gorbachev at the Waldorf.

Despite the enigma surrounding this encounter, Dave Williams' career continues to be a testament to his dedication and contributions to the field of materials science and engineering. His journey from Lehigh University to Ohio State University, and his tenure as president of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, stands as a beacon of academic excellence and leadership.
