New Kinder- und Familienzentrum Flüsseviertel to Boost Educational Infrastructure in Bremen Neustadt

The Kinder- und Familienzentrum (KiFaZ) Fluësseviertel and the expansion of the Inge-Katz-Schule in Bremen Neustadt, Germany, are part of an integrated project aimed at enhancing educational and family support infrastructure in the area.

Timeline - The project began with design planning in the early 2020s, focusing on meeting community needs and integrating the center with the existing school expansion. Construction commenced shortly after, and the expected completion and opening is targeted within the mid-2020s.

Design - The design promotes open, flexible, and child-friendly spaces that encourage learning, play, and community interaction. The architecture integrates the building with the surrounding urban environment, emphasizing natural light, sustainability, and green areas. Use of sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems is a key focus. - The spatial layout includes spaces for early childhood education, family support services, and multi-use community rooms, along with additional classrooms, specialized teaching areas, and recreational facilities for the Inge-Katz-Schule expansion. Seamless connectivity between both facilities is emphasized to foster collaboration and accessibility for families and children.

Key Features - Kinder- und Familienzentrum Fluësseviertel: The new center will provide early childhood education, family counseling/support services, multi-functional rooms for workshops, parent meetings, and community events, outdoor play areas tailored for young children’s development, and integration of social and educational services under one roof. - Inge-Katz-Schule Expansion: The expansion will bring increased classroom capacity, facilities for special needs education and inclusive learning, enhanced sports and recreational areas, and improved infrastructure for school administration and staff. - Sustainability: Both buildings incorporate green building standards, including energy-efficient heating and cooling, solar panels, and rainwater management. The new building will feature a green roof, an elevator, and a photovoltaic system. - Community Integration: The project aims to strengthen neighborhood ties by creating a central hub for families and children, promoting social inclusion and educational support.

The total costs of the project amount to 14.7 million euros. The new Kinder- und Familienzentrum Flüsseviertel will be located in Bremen Neustadt and replace the current Kinder- und Familienzentrum Delmestraße. The new building will be constructed as a passive house to promote energy efficiency and sustainability.

The first floor will house the Inge-Katz-Schule, a vocational school for social pedagogy and household management. Petra Zschüntzsch, deputy managing director and pedagogical director of KiTa Bremen, explained that the new Kinder- und Familienzentrum Flüsseviertel will create an additional twenty kindergarten places. The school rooms on the first floor will be designed as open areas that can be divided by partitions, shelves, or curtains to create different learning landscapes.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by representatives from Immobilien Bremen, KiTa Bremen, and the Inge-Katz-Schule. The completion of the new Kinder- und Familienzentrum Flüsseviertel is scheduled for the end of 2025. This project highlights Bremen’s commitment to fostering holistic child and family development through well-designed, multifunctional educational environments.

  1. Integrating science and environmental-science concepts in the early childhood education provided at the new Kinder- und Familienzentrum Fluësseviertel will be instrumental in fostering awareness and understanding of the environment, contributing to a lifestyle that respects and values sustainable practices.
  2. The educational offerings of the Inge-Katz-Schule expansion will extend to include courses in environmental-science, helping students develop a solid foundation in this discipline as part of their overall education and self-development.
