Kerala Minister Orders Probe After School Mime Performance on Palestine Halts
An investigation is underway in Kerala after a mime performance by students at Kasaragod Kumbala Higher Secondary School was interrupted, sparking discussions on freedom of expression in schools. The Education Minister, V. Sivankutty, has ordered the probe to protect students' rights to express themselves on global issues.
The incident occurred during a festival at the school. The event was halted, and the festival was rescheduled. The Minister was quick to respond, asserting that Kerala stands in solidarity with children and families in Palestine. He emphasized the government's commitment to freedom of expression within schools, stating that it is not acceptable for any authority to prevent students from expressing themselves on international matters. The Minister clarified that the halted performance does not reflect the state's official stance on the Palestine issue. Sivankutty instructed the Director of Public Education to investigate the incident and submit a report. The Minister also assured that the students will be allowed to perform the same mime on stage.
The investigation by the Directorate of Public Education is expected to provide clarity and protect students' opportunities for creative expression in the future. The Minister's stance reinforces the importance of allowing students to engage with global issues through cultural activities in educational institutions.
