Kenya hosts inaugural Startup World Cup regional event, exhibitcasing leading innovative startups

Kenya's dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem was on display recently at the first Startup World Cup regional competition, held at the Kenya Startup Festival. Ten exceptional startups, including BuuPass, Sio Valley Technologies, Ndovu, VunaPay, Neural Labs Africa, Jahazii, Leafy Life, Payd HQ, Melanin Kapital, and Zerobionic, showcased their innovative solutions to a global audience.

BuuPass, co-founded by Sonia Kabra and Wyclife Omondi, emerged as the winner of the competition. The platform enables bookings for bus, train, and flight travel, providing a convenient and efficient service for Kenyans. BuuPass will now represent Kenya at the Startup World Cup grand finale in San Francisco, competing for a $1 million investment.

VunaPay, an agri-fintech solution by Gatwĩri Njogu-Mokaya, delivers financial services to farmers, addressing a crucial need in the agricultural sector. Sio Valley Technologies, led by Trevor Siu, focuses on technological advancements, while Ndovu, founded by Radhika Bhachu, streamlines investment processes.

Jahazii, developed by Vaidehi Tembhekar, is a digital platform enhancing the efficiency of maritime logistics, and Neural Labs Africa, founded by Tom Kinyanjui Njoroge, specializes in artificial intelligence technologies. Leafy Life offers sustainable energy solutions, Payd HQ provides payroll management solutions, and Melanin Kapital finances African Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Zerobionic develops assistive technologies.

These ten startups were selected from over 160 applicants, demonstrating the innovative spirit of Kenya's entrepreneurs. The Kenyan finalists' participation in the Startup World Cup signifies the nation's eagerness to showcase its capabilities globally. The Startup World Cup, hosted by Pegasus Tech Ventures, is a prestigious global competition uniting more than 100 regional events across over 60 countries.

The Grand Finale of the Startup World Cup takes place in San Francisco, offering startups a unique opportunity for international exposure and the chance to secure substantial investments.
