Wekaza: A Fintech App Empowering the African Diaspora with Financial Education

Sabrina Lamb, a NAACP Image Award-nominated author and the force behind Wekeza, has launched an innovative fintech app designed to bridge the gap in financial literacy and inclusion for the African diaspora in the United States. Wekaza offers financial education in multiple languages, making it accessible to a diverse range of communities.

The app, which is an extension of Lamb's award-winning nonprofit WorldofMoney.org, teaches financial literacy to users in English, French, Swahili, Hausa, Wolof, Zulu, and Haitian Creole. It allows users to invest in U.S. stocks through fractional and whole shares starting at just $1, making investing more accessible to individuals, families, schools, and communities within the African diaspora.

Lamb's personal experiences with debt and her subsequent financial education have shaped her work in promoting financial literacy. After experiencing debt from traveling and signing contracts for financial aid and opening credit cards to fund her lifestyle, Lamb took a financial education course, which inspired her to create WorldofMoney. This organization went on to teach financial literacy to 500,000 children.

Wekeza, however, is designed to build wealth for the entire family, while WorldofMoney serves children. The app features culturally grounded financial lessons for both adults and youth, a user-friendly dashboard to open brokerage accounts quickly, portfolio tracking, market research tools, and a community platform for collaboration. It also includes the "Planet Wekeza" podcast to keep users informed and engaged in financial empowerment.

Lamb's achievements in various competitions and educational programs, such as being the Silicon Harlem C-Better Pitch Fest Competition Grand Prize winner and a graduate of the Y Combinator Start-Up School, demonstrate her dedication to entrepreneurship and financial literacy. Her work as a global advocate for financial inclusion is a testament to her commitment to making financial education accessible to diverse communities.

Wekaza is notable as the first Black woman-owned global investing app, aiming to break language and cultural barriers to foster generational wealth and confident financial decision-making among African diaspora communities in the U.S. For more information about Wekaza and to access the app, visit website.
