International school in Lisbon advances with construction and curriculum planning
In the heart of Lisbon's Alcântara district, the long-anticipated Lisboan International School is slated to open its doors in September 2025. The school will be situated within the historic A Napolitana pasta factory, a landmark building constructed in 1908 and currently undergoing a thorough renovation. The modernization aims to harmoniously blend the building's rich heritage with contemporary educational requirements, under the guidance of architect Frederico Valsassina [1][2][3].
Artemis Education has invested €75 million into the project, representing a €25 million increase from the originally planned investment. The school will occupy a total area of 11,500 m², designed to eventually accommodate up to 1,200 students [1][2]. Initially, the school is planned to accommodate 150 to 300 students, equipped with diverse facilities such as classrooms, science and technology laboratories, libraries, art and design studios, dance and music studios, a 170-seat theatre, sports facilities, a gym, a cafeteria, leisure areas, and collaborative classrooms [1].
Emphasizing the significance of 21st-century education, the Lisboan International School will adopt an educational approach that balances academic rigor, sustainability, and global citizenship. It will initially base its teaching on the British international curriculum, eventually transitioning to offering the full International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme by 2027 [1].
The school's promoters seek to honor Alcântara's cultural heritage by preserving and renovating the historic building rather than opting for new construction. The goal is to create a distinctive learning environment that empowers students to face global challenges and seize future opportunities [1].
