Germany's Federal Research Minister, Dorothee Bär, is gearing up to roll out a fresh recruitment program to entice top-tier researchers from around the globe, with a particular focus on those based in the U.S. In an interview with the "Handelsblatt", she shared her vision of providing more than just a job, but a comfortable, supportive home for the researchers and their families.
This push for international talent comes in response to the current challenges faced by U.S. universities, such as funding reductions and immigration restrictions under the Trump administration. The pool of potential applicants is not limited to the U.S., but rather encompasses researchers worldwide.
Minister Bär acknowledges that Germany is unlikely to match the top salaries offered in the U.S. However, she emphasizes that German institutions offer the priceless benefit of guaranteed academic freedom. To sweeten the deal, she plans to boost funding for organizations like the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the German Research Foundation, creating scholarships and research opportunities to attract top talent.
The program aims to offer a complete, worry-free package, providing both job opportunities for partners and childcare services for children. This holistic approach to recruitment is intended to create an environment that encourages researchers to focus on their work and settle comfortably in Germany.
Bavaria's Prime Minister, Markus Soeder, has also shown interest in welcoming international researchers to the region, further enhancing the appeal for those considering a move to Germany.
