DHL Express Opens Sustainable International Hub in Barcelona

DHL Express has expanded its news operations in Barcelona with the opening of a new international hub at Barcelona-El Prat Airport. The new facility, built with an investment of 80 million euros, is designed to accommodate the projected growth of the next 20 years and strengthen Barcelona's position as a key location for DHL Express's international parcel transport.

The new hub, which incorporates solutions that minimize environmental impact, aligns with DHL Group's sustainability goals. It is built with environmental sustainability as a priority, aiming to reduce its CO2 footprint to below 29 million tonnes by 2030 and targeting 30% of its aviation fuel to be sustainable (SAF) by the same year.

The new hub, which can process more than 20,000 pieces per hour, represents a sevenfold increase in capacity compared to the previous operation. It is equipped with state-of-the-art X-ray solutions for maximum security and features a customs control that ensures individual monitoring of each package.

Spain plays a strategic role in the DHL Express global network due to its advanced logistics infrastructure and geographical location. The new hub is designed to connect international air routes within Europe, America, and North Africa, underscoring Spain's role as a bridge between these continents.

The new hub will serve the entire Catalan region, including the provinces of Barcelona, Lleida, Girona, and Tarragona, as well as the Balearic Islands and Andorra. This expansion is expected to support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises in the region.

DHL Express has seen its activity in Barcelona grow by 30% over the past five years, primarily driven by the rise of international e-commerce. The management responsible for the planning and coordination of the operation of the new DHL Express International Hub at Barcelona-El Prat Airport is led by Mike Parra, CEO of DHL Express Europe.

The new hub sets a new standard in terms of safety and sustainability, reflecting DHL Express's commitment to responsible business practices. With this expansion, DHL Express plans to further improve intercontinental connectivity through commercial flights, incorporating two new network flights.

In summary, the new DHL Express Hub in El Prat is a significant step forward in the company's efforts to expand its news operations, improve sustainability, and strengthen its position as a leader in the logistics industry.
