ISTANBUL'S HEARTWARMING EFFORT
Hospitalized children receive boost of happiness courtesy of creatively crafted toys by high school students.
In a vibrant high school tucked away in Istanbul's Pendik district, a group of passionate students embarked on a moving social project entitled "Hug Me." This initiative, born out of compassion and creativity, aims to bring smiles and comfort to young patients in hospitals across the city.
Initial chapters
The project's conception unfolded amid the heartbreak of Turkey's devastating earthquakes on February 6, 2023, centered in Kahramanmaraş. The project's founders sought to soothe the deep wounds affecting children, the most vulnerable victims of the catastrophe. By crafting handmade plush toys, these high school students aimed to ease their psychological turmoil and combat feelings of loneliness among hospitalized children. Simultaneously, the project fostered a sense of social responsibility and empathy among the students themselves.
DIY love pillows
The students sweat and toil, sewing and assembling the plush toys by hand. Carefully designed, these huggable toys are tailored to provide emotional support via their size, substance, and texture. Each toy features a cloth label bearing the project's name and a heartfelt, handwritten message of encouragement.
Pre-delivery protocol
Before these toys can bring warmth and happiness to children in hospitals, they undergo thorough sanitization and careful packaging to guarantee hygienic standards. The cuddly creations are then distributed through a network of local NGOs and community leaders.
A rewarding journey
For the students engaged in this project, the experience has been personally transformative. Local rising star Sena Peküz shared, "Sewing these toys for hospitalized children has been incredibly rewarding."
Another student, İrem Çelik, spoke of the project's ability to cultivate empathy and heighten her sense of responsibility.
"From the outset, I endeavored to envision myself in those children's shoes. I envisioned their happiness upon receiving a toy. This empathy grew stronger as we moved forward."
