Historically scrutinized sexual assault case results in accusations against a professor at the University of Manitoba
In a shocking turn of events, Oleg Pokhanovski, a music professor at the University of Manitoba, has been charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation. The charges stem from allegations involving a then-15-year-old private music student between 2007 and 2010.
Pokhanovski, who is known for his skills as a violinist, pianist, arranger, and music educator, allegedly groomed the student during private lessons and sexually assaulted her off campus. The investigation into these incidents began in February 2025, initiated by a police agency in Canada, and after a thorough probe, charges were authorized by Manitoba Prosecution Services.
The alleged victim, who originally comes from Winnipeg but has since moved, was a student receiving private music lessons from Pokhanovski at the university. It is important to note that the university takes the matter very seriously and is cooperating fully with the Winnipeg Police Service in the ongoing investigation.
Pokhanovski turned himself in to police in late July 2025 and was arrested and detained. Following the charges, he was placed on leave by the university and is not attending campus or university activities. As of August 2025, Pokhanovski remains charged, but there is no detailed public information about the trial or case resolution status yet.
It is also alleged that Pokhanovski repeatedly emailed the victim after she ended the relationship, attempting to reinitiate contact. However, it is crucial to remember that none of the charges against Pokhanovski have been proven in court.
The University of Manitoba has confirmed that Pokhanovski has been placed on leave, and the university stands ready to support anyone affected by this situation. The university encourages anyone with information or concerns to come forward and speak with appropriate authorities.
