Celebrating the 20th UNESCO World Heritage Day in Germany

On June 1st, Germany's UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland will commemorate World Heritage Day under the theme "Communicate, connect, inspire."

In Saarland, the Völklingen Ironworks will open its doors, offering an art trail, children's guided tours, time travel exhibitions, and a sound walk. The entrance fee for guided tours is five euros, and the entrance to the exhibition in the Blast Furnace Hall "The True Size of Africa" is reduced to nine euros for the day.

Rhineland-Palatinate's Shum Sites, including Speyer, Worms, and Mainz, will be hosting free guided tours. In Worms, visitors can also explore the Jewish Museum Raschi-Haus or learn about the history and significance of the Shum community with original sources from the 14th century. Speyer will feature musical performances by "Klezmers Techter" ensemble and the choir of the Jewish religious community, as well as guided tours in the "Beith Shalom" synagogue, the Cathedral, and the Shum community center, priced between zero and 15 euros. Families with children can participate in a rally where children receive keychains at the end.

The Old Jewish Cemetery "Judensand" in Mainz will conduct free guided tours, providing insights into the personalities buried there in the Middle Ages, the meaning of the gravestone symbols, and Jewish burial and mourning rituals. Male participants are expected to wear head coverings during the tour.

Bingen, in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, and Trier, Germany's oldest city, will also celebrate the 20th UNESCO World Heritage Day with unique programs. Bingen's events will take place in a unique setting on the Rhine, including a discovery tour, Roman medical instruments exhibitions, harbor crane demonstration, and a walk through history in the park by the Mouse Tower. Admission is free for all events.

Trier will offer an audio walk, allowing guests to follow in the footsteps of Roman history and the city's architecture. Families can solve puzzling questions together and explore the historic Porta Nigra at the Porta Nigra rally.
