Hamburg Embraces the Future of Mobility

Hamburg, Germany, is making strides in modernizing its mobility landscape. The city, known as the Hanseatic city, is investing significantly in various mobility projects, aiming to become a model for future mobility.

The 'Metropol Model Region Mobility' in Hamburg is testing innovative projects to promote modern mobility. These include the development of rapid cycling routes (Radschnellwege), autonomous driving, and better integration and networking of existing mobility offers. The city is also investing around 2 million euros in intelligent bus traffic as part of the Mobility Transition project.

Transnational cooperation is being driven to advance urban air mobility. The City of Hamburg, along with Hochbahn and car-sharing providers, plans to expand e-mobility by 2024. The city is also home to innovative startups like Nüwiel, which developed an electric bicycle trailer (eTrailer) with patented technology.

Nüwiel's innovation was recognised at the Mobility Festival HEY/Hamburg, where they won the 10,000 euro prize at the HEY/Pioneer competition. The festival, which took place from June 22 to 23, 2023, at the Chamber of Commerce Hamburg, aimed to find ideas for the future of mobility. Startups and scaleups from around the world presented their innovations and business ideas for tomorrow's mobility at the competition.

Hamburg is not only focusing on land-based mobility. The city aims to host the World Cycling Congress 2026, further solidifying its commitment to promoting cycling as a viable and sustainable mode of transport.

According to the traffic authority, 68 percent of all journeys in the city are now made by public transport, bicycle, or on foot. This statistic underscores the city's success in encouraging sustainable modes of transport.
