Title: Kickstart Your Career in Yakutia's Resource Industry: A Peek into the South Yakutsk Technological College

YAKUTIA.INFO. In a surprising revelation at a job fair, it transpired that Yakutians aren't too keen on working in the industry, despite decent pay and conditions. One major factor causing this apathy is the muddled career guidance from school. The appeal of working in an industrial enterprise has taken a backseat for the region's youth and adults. On the contrary, people from outside regions are willing to relocate to Yakutia for its attractive wages, with even entry-level specialists pocketing up to 180,000 rubles!

So, let's shed some light on the path to discover Yakutia's resources and learn how to get started. One of the premier educational institutions for industry education is the "South Yakutsk Technological College" (SYTC) in Neryungri, whose demand among students has risen significantly in recent years. We sat down with the college's director, Irina Yuryevna Podmazkova, to gather insights into the college, its benefits, and its industry connections.

  • Irina, give us a quick rundown of the college.
  • Today, it's a cutting-edge academic institution. Students can master their craft in fully-equipped workshops and labs. Our faculty members also receive regular practical training on-site at enterprises. More than that, resource-using enterprise staff are directly involved in the educational process.

The quality of education is lifted through the college's involvement in the Federal "Professionalism" program. This innovative teaching method includes tailored programs designed to meet the economic climate, crafted with input from partner enterprises.

Graduates of these programs receive not just a diploma of secondary vocational education but also 3-4 certificates of working qualifications. This supports senior students in securing jobs at enterprises and juggling learning and work simultaneously.

Industry demand is skyrocketing. Since 2021, partner enterprises' recommendations have led to a rise in college admissions from 480 students to 625 by 2024, and this figure is expected to keep growing.

As for employment, college graduates consistently have high rates, with no less than 98% successfully landing jobs in large companies.

  • How do you work with industrial enterprises?

The college has 18 long-term partnership agreements with enterprises, including LLC "UK "Kolmar", JSC "Yakutugol" and LLC "Elgaugol", NGRUES, RZhD, ZHDY, and more.

Thanks to this, the institution is well-outfitted. Enterprise employees aid students in learning and offer insights on workplace realities. Students get hands-on training at enterprises, ensuring a smooth transition from education to employment.

In 2023, an educational-production cluster was created to train personnel for Yakutia's mining sector. It includes three coal companies: LLC "UK "Kolmar", JSC "Yakutugol", and LLC "Elgaugol". They contributed to the college by funding classroom renovations and equipping the lab infrastructure, mirroring real production conditions.

Five specialized training labs were established: occupational safety and production safety, mining equipment repair, ore beneficiation, underground mining, and mining planning. Six workshops were launched for mining equipment repair and production: machine shop, mining equipment repair, assembly and disassembly of parts, process design, mining equipment repair, and electrical equipment maintenance. Two training grounds were opened: "Technologies and Mechanization of Underground Works" and "Open Pit Mining Works".

"Kolmar" launched a scholarship program for students aspiring to work with the company. Since 2023, 90 students have received scholarships.

Which specialties are most sought after by resource users?

Enterprises in Southern Yakutia are particularly interested in specialties dedicated to the development of deposits using both open and underground methods, ore beneficiation, mining equipment repair, surveying, and transport and energy.

What additional subjects do students study besides the core ones?

Partners suggested including the following subjects in the curriculum: Professionally-oriented - "Fundamentals of Professional Self-Determination and Self-Development", "Professional Ethics", "Project Management and Teamwork". Holistic – "Planning and Conducting Technological Processes at a Mining Enterprise", "Automation of Production Processes and Production". Legal – "Industrial Safety of Professional Activity", "Monitoring Compliance with Industry Standards, Instructions, and Safety Rules", "Industrial Safety and Subsoil Use".

Additionally, there are 2-4 professional courses in each program to obtain a working qualification.

- What positions can students secure after the college?

  • Typically, college graduates are hired as qualified workers and clerks. Yet, the most ambitious students quickly become foremen and shift supervisors.

With the enterprises on board, plans for the following academic year's student enrollment are formulated. This avoids mismatches in the preparation level of graduates.

- What's the duration of the training?

  • The average training duration for students in the following programs is: For qualified workers and clerks – from 10 months based on a general secondary education to 2 years and 10 months based on a basic general education. For middle-level specialists – from 1 year 10 months to 3 years 10 months.

- What's the employment rate with a college diploma?

  • College graduates are in high demand. Over the last five years, the employment rate has averaged 98-100%. Noteworthy, among the graduates of the South Yakutsk Technological College, there are no registered unemployed in the Center for Labor and Employment.

In a nutshell, college graduates not only acquire necessary knowledge and skills but are well-prepared for real-world working conditions on enterprises. We hope this lends clarity to our readers about charting a pathway into the industry.
