Government financial aid for teachers is commendable - Tokayev expresses gratitude to educators
In a heartening display of intellectual prowess, Kazakhstani students have been making waves in international subject olympiads and scientific competitions. This growing presence and success in academic and intellectual arenas was recently praised by the Head of State, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Last year, schoolchildren from Kazakhstan participated in over 30 such competitions, bringing home a significant number of medals. Among these, nearly 200 were gold, over 300 were silver, and around 500 were bronze. One of the most notable achievements was Kazakhstan’s National School of Physics and Mathematics securing the silver medal at the 2025 World Schools Team Chess Championship. This was a close call, as they tied with The Harker School from the USA on match points, but won on tiebreaks.
A Kazakhstani player, Imangali Akhilbay, also made headlines with an outstanding individual accomplishment, achieving a perfect score (8/8) on board two. Another remarkable feat was Aray, a Kazakhstani student, being selected to represent Kazakhstan at the 2025 European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO). After intensive training and rounds held in Astana, Aray secured first place in the national selection among 107 competitors.
President Tokayev, who believes that the future of Kazakhstan lies in the hands of its creative youth, held a meeting with 24 schoolchildren who won international subject olympiads at the Akorda residence. During this meeting, he presented certificates for monetary prizes to the gold, silver, and bronze medalists. The monetary prizes for gold, silver, and bronze medalists were worth 1,500 MCI ($3,600), 1,000 MCI ($2,400), and 500 MCI ($1,200), respectively.
President Tokayev also expressed his gratitude to the teachers who prepared these talented students for the international competitions. He praised the parents who raised a generation with high intellectual potential, acknowledging their crucial role in nurturing these academic stars.
In October 2025, Astana will host the 2nd FIDE Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities, further highlighting Kazakhstan’s active role in global scientific and intellectual competitions. This significant international chess event for players with visual, hearing, and physical impairments is a testament to Kazakhstan's commitment to inclusivity in intellectual pursuits.
