Gaza's Healthcare on Brink: Hospitals Close Amid Fuel Shortages and Israeli Offensive

The situation in Gaza's healthcare system is dire. Emergency fuel supplies provided by the UN are running out, leading to hospital closures. Only 14 hospitals remain functional, with eight in Gaza City on the brink of collapse.

The Israeli military offensive has forced four hospitals to shut down in Gaza City this month alone. This leaves the city, which hosts nearly half of the Strip's hospitals, with a severely strained united healthcare system. The exact number of patients in the critically threatened hospitals is unknown, but they are struggling with shortages of blood units, blood bags, and transfusion sets, leading to patients being treated on the floor.

The UN has called for an urgent ceasefire and unhindered access to support the remaining hospitals. However, over 15,000 people in need of evacuation for medical reasons are facing slow progress. Israeli forces continue to push into Gaza City, displacing hundreds of thousands and affecting hundreds of health facilities. Even hospitals not asked to evacuate may be put out of service due to lack of access and nearby violence. Since 7 September, all but one of the dozen reported attacks on healthcare have been in Gaza City.

With hospitals overwhelmed and low on supplies, the healthcare system in Gaza City is on the verge of collapse. The UN's call for a ceasefire and access to medical supplies is urgent, as the situation continues to deteriorate, putting thousands of lives at risk.
