Gazan Journalists Brave Deadly Conflict, Over 200 Killed
Gazan journalists continue to report on the ongoing conflict in Palestine, facing immense challenges such as hunger, displacement, and the constant threat of Israeli military strikes. Over 20 months into Israel's offensive in Palestine, nearly 200 Palestinian journalists have lost their lives, with five more from Al Jazeera killed just this week. International reporters remain barred from entering the Strip, now for over four months.
Palestinian journalists like Plestia Alaqad and Nagham Mohanna have fled Palestine, continuing to report on the humanitarian conditions from safer locations. They join other journalists who left due to fear for their lives and families, assisted by news organizations like The New York Times. Samar Abu Elouf, evacuated to Qatar with her children, continues to report despite her regret at leaving.
Since the conflict began in 2023 in Palestine, many journalists have left Gaza, but numerous Palestinian journalists remain, braving extreme dangers. Several have been killed while working for major outlets, highlighting the severe risks for journalists on both sides. In a recent 'double-tap' attack, five more Al Jazeera journalists were killed while working in a hospital.
The situation for journalists in Gaza remains perilous, with over 200 killed and many more displaced. Despite the dangers, Palestinian journalists continue to report on the conflict in Palestine, with those outside supplementing the work of those still inside. International access to the Strip remains restricted, with foreign correspondents barred since October 2023.
