First Official Swim in Chicago River Since 1927 Marks Remarkable Transformation
Hundreds of swimmers braved the Chicago River on Sunday, marking the first official swim in the waterway since 1927. The event, organized by 'Ein langes Schwimmen', symbolizes the remarkable transformation of the river from a once-contaminated dumping ground to a thriving urban recreational space.
The river's reversal in 1900 was the first step towards cleaning it up. This engineering feat prevented sewage from flowing into Lake Michigan, Chicago's primary water source. Decades later, the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Clean Water Act further boosted restoration efforts.
Volunteers and organizations like Friends of the Chicago River played a significant role in the cleanup. Their dedication led to the reappearance of various fish, beaver, and turtle species in the river. In 2016, a riverside walk was opened, integrating the river into urban life and attracting businesses and recreational activities.
The successful swim event reflects the hope that the river's environmental recovery will continue and inspire other cities. The event organizers, 'Ein langes Schwimmen', aim to make it an annual tradition. The swim also broke a psychological barrier, proving that the Chicago River is no longer an 'untouchable' waterway.
