Extremist ideologies among youth in Saarland schools: The CDU advocates for a comprehensive covert investigation
In the heart of Saarland, concerns are mounting over the increasing reports of right-wing extremist tendencies among young people. Amidst this growing unease, Jutta Schmitt-Lang, deputy faction leader and education spokesperson of the CDU state parliament faction, has reiterated the party's demand for a comprehensive dark field analysis of violent incidents in the school context.
Schmitt-Lang, in a recent statement, asserted that refusing the demanded study fails in the core task of education policy, which is to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for students and teachers. She further emphasised that without reliable data, effective counteraction against violence and extremism becomes more challenging.
The CDU's demand for a comprehensive analysis is aimed at including all forms of extremism and creating reliable foundations for developing tailored prevention and intervention measures. Experts and practitioners have also voiced their support for this initiative, stating that reliable data is necessary for targeted counteraction.
However, the SPD majority in the Saarland state parliament has so far remained silent on this renewed demand. The extremism area was completely removed from a hearing in the education committee by the SPD majority, adding to the CDU's concerns.
The CDU believes that violence and extremism often start early and need to be addressed in schools. Schmitt-Lang stated that safety begins with honesty and transparency, and that a realistic assessment is crucial to combat violence and extremism effectively.
The CDU state parliament faction in Saarland warns against trivializing extremist developments and violent structures. They emphasise that school must be a safe space for both children and teachers, and that addressing the rising right-wing extremism among young people is a priority.
Despite the SPD majority's rejection of the CDU's demand for a comprehensive analysis of extremism in schools, the CDU remains resolute in their advocacy for action to be taken against violence and extremism in schools in Saarland. The situation remains a topic of ongoing debate and discussion in the state parliament.
