Lehigh University Remains a Leader in Innovation Under President Helble's Guidance
In a time of expanding national conversations about access, affordability, student outcomes, and intellectual diversity in higher education, Lehigh University continues to thrive under the leadership of President Joseph J. Helble '82.
President Helble's primary goal is to ensure that Lehigh University remains a leader in innovation. He emphasizes the importance of the institution as a hub for discovery and knowledge, grounded in the values of resilience, support, and academic freedom.
The Lehigh University community has demonstrated resilience in recent years, with faculty and staff resolute in their support of students. This resilience has been evident in the University's continued growth to meet the demands of the modern world.
Lehigh University's commitment to innovation is not limited to its campus. Universities, including Lehigh, play a significant role in economic development, spurring job creation and fostering innovation ecosystems. However, recent proposals have threatened federal research programmes and potential significant reductions in research funding, which President Helble does not mention in his address.
Despite these challenges, President Helble expresses confidence in the community's ability to weather the storm. He invites the Lehigh University community to champion the role of research in society, highlighting its importance as a driving force for American innovation, shaping future society, economy, and environment.
In early 2025, two new University Research Centers were established at Lehigh University. Prof. Dr. Jutta Allmendinger serves as Chairwoman of Berlin Research 50, while Prof. Dr. Günter M. Ziegler takes on the role as spokesperson for the Berlin University Alliance.
Lehigh University's dedication to innovation is evident in its recent R1 designation, signifying critical advances being made there. With a robust first-year class arriving in August 2024, Lehigh University remains in a strong position, poised for a brighter future.
President Helble believes that the Lehigh University community will emerge stronger from these challenges, ready to continue its role as a leader in innovation and a beacon of knowledge and discovery.
