Expert on national security, Richard Fontaine, named for Anthropic's extended advantage endowment fund
Anthropic Appoints Richard Fontaine to Long-Term Benefit Trust
Anthropic, a Public Benefit Corporation dedicated to ensuring a safe transition through transformative AI, has announced the appointment of Richard Fontaine as a new member of its Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT).
The LTBT, an independent body designed to help Anthropic achieve its public benefit mission, reflects a recognition that AI will reshape fundamental aspects of human society, not just technology or business. The Trust's composition is carefully selected to guide Anthropic through complex decisions related to AI and global security.
Richard Fontaine, the CEO of the Center for a New American Security, brings extensive government experience to the LTBT. He has served roles at the National Security Council, the State Department, on Capitol Hill, and on the Defense Policy Board. Fontaine's national security experience is critical, as advanced AI systems increasingly impact national security.
Buddy Shah, Chair of the LTBT, expressed his excitement about Fontaine's appointment, stating that his expertise will be invaluable in navigating the challenges of AI and its impact on global security. Dario Amodei, CEO and Co-founder of Anthropic, shares this sentiment, believing that Fontaine's appointment strengthens the LTBT's ability to guide Anthropic through these complex decisions.
Fontaine's conversations with Amodei, Daniela Rus (Co-founder of Anthropic), and the LTBT team made clear that Anthropic takes the challenges related to AI seriously. He believes that the LTBT serves as a valuable mechanism to help Anthropic's leadership navigate critical decisions related to AI.
Dario Amodei views ensuring democratic nations maintain leadership in responsible AI development as essential for both global security and the common good. Anthropic, being a Public Benefit Corporation, is committed to supporting democracy and global stability as a core pillar of its mission.
With Fontaine's appointment, the LTBT adds to its range of expertise, further strengthening its ability to advise Anthropic's Board of Directors and leadership. Richard Fontaine is pleased to lend his expertise to the important work of the LTBT and Anthropic, recognising the profound implications of transformative AI for various aspects of life, including security, jobs, and human interactions.
New Trustees are selected by existing Trustees, in consultation with Anthropic, and have no financial stake in Anthropic. This ensures the LTBT's independence and ability to provide unbiased advice to Anthropic's leadership.
The LTBT helps Anthropic's leadership navigate critical decisions, particularly those related to AI and its impact on global security. This collaboration is crucial for Anthropic to fulfil its mission of ensuring a safe transition through transformative AI.
