A Dirty Little Secret Hidden in the Bathroom Stalls

Remember the smell of gym mats, waxed floors, and the sweat of childhood? Break times brought a sense of freedom, where we could roam and do as we pleased. A sudden flurry of excitement, hushed whispers, and an invitation to the bathroom — I couldn't help but follow. This was sixth grade, and my FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) was already in full swing.

Over to the girls' bathroom, briefly avoiding the rowdy boys and their urinals. The doors shut, the stalls filled. "What's happening?" we wonder. One by one, they pull out a magazine. A porn one.

Yes, we thought, found under some guy’s bed. And then we flip through it.

No Wedding Bells for Me!

Picture a newlywed couple grinning from ear to ear, honking their way out of the church, a tin can bouquet dangling from their car. The bride tosses her bouquet, a future bride catches it, and they drive off into their honeymoon. The groom is already groaning as he adjusts the bride’s dress, this little detail caught by the comic strip. Next page: hand on knee, hand on thigh, the hand moves further, finally it’s all under the skirt. The groom is now looking more distorted, eyes flickering, and we're not sure if it's pleasure or pain. Why the bride, clad in her veil and nothing else, is doing this, we don't understand.

Although we weren't quite sure what "blowing" was or why it was called that, we could sense this was adult stuff, things we shouldn't be seeing. Nausea hit, I left the cramped stall and awkwardly stumbled into the gymnasium, losing my balance on the beam.

Early Encounters, Late Consequences

I was left with disturbing images in my head, and I vowed: I will never get married! If adults can be so disgusting, then I don't want that beautiful day. I would later learn that not all marriages are like that and that people could get married multiple times.

As it turns out, what I saw in that magazine wasn't so terrible after all. It could get much worse, but I kept that little secret from my parents. The thought of being grounded for life was scarier than the porn. Besides, I had more important things to focus on — like finally kissing Sven.

First Porn at 14

Decades later, I realized our early exposure to pornography is the norm now. Especially for girls, that first encounter often happens unintentionally. I can confirm that from my own experience, and I still shudder at the memories. But I hope by speaking up, I can help parents start the conversation about porn with their children.

Key Insight: Early exposure to pornography can influence a child's understanding of sexuality and relationships, leading to misconceptions, objectification, and potentially emotional issues. It's essential for parents to discuss the difference between pornography and real-life relationships to help children develop healthy attitudes towards sex and relationships.

PS: I didn't kiss Sven.

  1. Community policies regarding education-and-self-development and health-and-wellness should include mandatory vocational training programs on understanding the impacts of pornography on adolescent sexuality and mental health.
  2. The lifestyle of our youth today involves early exposure to pornography, which can lead to misconceptions about sexuality and relationships. This necessitates a shift in the science of sex education towards a focus on promoting healthy attitudes and preventing objectification.
  3. In the realm of entertainment, it's crucial to recognize the role media plays in shaping a generation's understanding of relationships, and therefore, the need for proper guidance and vocational training in this area should be prioritized in our community policy.
